The Starting Point
A mid-career professional in Kuala Lumpur had been putting off meeting with a financial planner for two years because they felt they did not know enough to make the meeting worthwhile. A colleague mentioned the Vocabulary Programme.
During the Programme
The four evening sessions covered exactly the terms that had felt opaque: defined contribution structures, EPF account types and withdrawal rules, and the broad shape of private retirement schemes. They kept notes and brought them to sessions two and three.
After Attending
They scheduled the adviser meeting they had been postponing. During that meeting they were able to follow the discussion and ask questions about specific product features rather than asking for everything to be explained from scratch. They described the adviser meeting as "the first one that felt like a conversation."
Case Study · Long Income Reading Cohort
The Starting Point
A couple approaching their mid-fifties enrolled together in the Long Income Cohort. One had a background in engineering; the other had no exposure to financial documents of any kind. They wanted to understand what they were looking at before their retirement timeline compressed further.
During the Programme
The weekly reading sessions let each participant engage at their own level. The facilitator handled their different starting points without making either feel left behind. The printed reader became a shared household document — both used the same copy, with different coloured sticky notes.
After Attending
Ten weeks later they had completed their reflection workbooks and used them in a joint meeting with a licensed financial planner. The planner noted they arrived with a clearer picture of what they were looking for than most clients at that stage. The cohort's source list gave them additional reading to do between sessions.
